Longbourn House

"What praise is more valuable than the praise of an intelligent servant?”
Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

Longbourn House novel by Jo Baker is a beautiful spin off of Pride and Prejudice!
Sarah is a orphaned housemaid. She spends her days scrubbing the laundry, polishing the floors, and emptying the chamber pots for the Bennet household.
Sarah is the main characters. Her hard everyday work describes part of the social status of servants into the 19th century and they strict life rules marked by sacrifices and work often exhausting.

The story location is the Hertfordshire countryside (not only!) and Sarah, like many young girls of her time, become housemaid before being a woman.
The hard work, the wake up when the sun does not rise yet, the hands constantly rough from the cold and frost, the endless chores and the poverty that becomes wealth when all they goods are in a small wooden box hides under the bed!
Everything to allow ladies and gentlemens to have all the comforts expected from their social rank.

(Longbourn House, Jo Baker)

"There could be no wearing of clothes without their laundering, just as surely as there could be no going without clothes, not in Herfordhshire anyway and not in September. Washday could not  be avoided, but the weekly purification of the household's linen was nonetheless a dismal prospect for Sarah". (Longbourn House, Jo Baker)

Drying Clothes by Helen Allingham

The beginning of the book remeber us the beautiful poem Washing Day by Anna Barbauld in which she  introduces an ironic view on the power relationships that existed between men and describe the hard work of women, their determination and effort in performing the ritual of washing the clothes by force of their arms and hands.
At Longbourn House Sarah works hardly and dreams a different life and a love.
And when she fell in love with James, she waiting patiently his return without giving up until she finds the strength to redeem her life to became a free woman.

Downton Abbey - Anna Bates

Downton Abbey - Daisy

Sara reminds me two Downton Abbey characters: Anna Bates the personal maid to Lady Mary (as Sarah with Elisabeth Bennet) and Daisy the cook's assistant who educates herself and tries ransom from her social condition.

But did Longbourn really exit? We exactly don't know but an interesting essey of Prof. Kenneth Smith reconstructed,  through the spoken and unspoken of Pride and Prejudice, a possible location for Longbourn placing it in an area between the villages of Redbourn / Harpenden / Kimpton  in the county of 'Hertfordshire.

(Longbourn House in Pride and Prejudice Movie 2005)

Waiting the release of the film based on the novel (coming next year) and looking for something to fill the gap left at the end of Downton Abbey episodes, I found on the web a very interesting series: three documentaries titled the True Story of Life Below Stairs presented by Prof. Pamela Cox (great niece of a housemaid) that tells through videos, photos and testimonies, the true stories of servants from the Victorian era to World War II.
