Nel cuore delle Cotswolds, la catena collinare situata nell'area centrale dell'Inghilterra, e lungo il corso del fiume Coln, si trova un piccolo villaggio che sembra appena uscito da un libro di fiabe. Il suo nome e Bibury e si trova a metà strada tra le località di Barnsley e Coln St. Aldwyns nella contea del Gloucestershire.

In the middle of the Cotswolds, a range of rolling hills located in south central England, and along the River Coln, it is a small village that seems straight out of a storybook. Bibury is located halfway between the towns of Barnsley and Coln St. Aldwyns in Gloucestershire.

Il villaggio è immerso nel verde e la sua particolarità è dovuta ai suoi cottages in pietra risalenti al XIV sec. che furono costruiti dapprima come ovili poi ospitarono i tessitori della zona.

The village is known for its stone cottages dating back to the fourteenth century. They were first built as folds then hosted weavers.

Una citazione del villaggio (Becheberie), si trova nel Domesday Book un testo critto in latino volgare e termini anglosassoni, un documento sui beni terrieri dell’Inghilterra, ricco di informazioni sociali, economiche, storiche, che risale al Medio Evo ed in particolare al regno dei Normanni. 

Compilato nel 1086 per ordine di Guglielmo il Conquistatore, il Domesday book (letteralmente Libro del giudizio) aveva lo scopo di quantificare i beni di ogni proprietario e le tasse su tali beni riscosse ai tempi di Edoardo il Confessore (1002-1066).

The village of Bibury (Becheberie) has been found in the Domesday Book a manuscript written in medieval latin, a document on the landlords property of England, rich in social, economic, historical, dating back to the Middle Ages and in particular to kingdom of the Normans.
Compiled aimed to quantify the properties of each owner and the taxes levied on such goods to the time of Edward the Confessor in 1086 on the orders of William the Conqueror, the Domesday book (literally the Book of Judgement) (1002-1066).

In questo villaggio c’è una piccola e celebre strada che si dice sia la più fotografata di tutta l'Inghilterra, Si tratta di Arlington Row composta da una fila di case in pietra costruite nel 1380 come case e depositi per i tessitori. All'inizio della strada si trova Arlington Mill il mulino che serviva per la follatura della lana.

The picturesque Arlington Row cottages were built in 1380 as a monastic wool store. It is one of the most photographed Cotswold scenes. This was converted into a row of cottages for weavers in the seventeenth century. The cloth produced there was sent to Arlington Mill for fulling.

La chiesa parrocchiale di St Mary  e di origini sassoni. Si pensa che Bibury sia stato un luogo di certa importanza per i sassoni poiché  Arlington significa ‘casa agricola di Aelfred’. Bibury è oggi meta di molti turisti. Alla fine dell’800 vicino Bibury fu ritrovata una villa romana (Akeman Street, la maggiore strada romana in Britannia che da circencester porta a st albans,  è molto vicina).
Il più grande edificio in Bibury è Bibury Court, costruita nel 1633 in stile di architettura giacobita. Oggi è un albergo ma in epoca precedente fu abitato Lord Sherborne.
Bibury è stato utilizzato come location cinematografica e televisiva, come i film di "Stardust" e "Il diario di Bridget Jones".

The parish church of St Mary has Saxon origins.  Arlington means the ‘farmstead belonging to Aelfred’. Judging by the Saxon elements in the church, Bibury must have been a place of some importance to the Saxons.

At the end of ninentheen near Bibury was found a Roman villa (the Roman road from Cirencester to St Albans, Akeman Street, is close by).

The largest building in Bibury is Bibury Court, built in 1633 in the style of Jacobean architecture. It is now a hotel. Previously it was inhabited by Lord Sherborne.

Bibury has been used as a film and television location, like the films Stardust and Bridget Jones's Diary.

Joseph Arthur Gibbs (1867 -1899) giocatore inglese di cricket, ha pubblicato una serie di libri, tra cui "A Cotswold Village; or, country life and pursuits in Gloucestershire". Ecco una piccola citazione su Bibury ..

"Non esiste villaggio più bello in Inghilterra di Bibury, e nessun osteria più accogliente di quella del Cigno. La padrona di casa di questo albergo dispone di specchio d'acqua per coloro che attraversano la strada per Bibury. Non esiste un luogo più piacevole in cui trascorrere qualche giorno tranquillo. Il giardino e la vecchia casa di Bibury sono davvero deliziosi, la casa, come Ablington, è costruita da trecento anni; la corrente del fiume passa vicino, sopra un'altra cascata di circa dieci piedi, e ben presto raggiunge Williamstrip ".

“I know no prettier village in England than Bibury, and no snugger hostelry than the Swan. The landlady of this inn has a nice little stretch of water for the use of those who find their way to Bibury; and a pleasanter place wherein to spend a few quiet days could not be found. The garden and old court house of Bibury are sweetly pretty, the house, like Ablington, being three hundred years old; the stream passes within a few yards of it, over another waterfall of about ten feet, and soon reaches Williamstrip”.
