In the footsteps of monks and ancient abbeys...

There was once a castle on a rocky cliff with a wonderful view of the river and surrounding valley ... Nearby, a thick forest leading to an upper slopes solitary and wild, on the other side towards the wide white sandy beaches ... 

C'era una volta, tanto tempo fa un castello su un dirupo roccioso con una meravigliosa vista sul fiume e sulla valle circostante…Nei pressi, un fitto bosco conduceva a monte verso pendii solitari e selvatici, a valle verso ampie spiagge bianche e sabbiose…

The castle of Abatemarco

When I saw these ruins I was enchanted. It was a night and in the darkness of the place there  was a full moon very suggestive. I could not take pictures ... so the next morning I went back on the trail of monks and ancient stories ...

Quando ho visto questi ruderi sono rimasta incantata. Era di notte e nel buio del luogo risplendeva una luna piena molto suggestiva. Peccato che non potevo fare foto…così la mattina dopo sono ritornata sulle tracce di monaci e antiche storie… 

The ruins

The castle of Abatemarco is overlooking the river in the territory of Santa Maria del Cedro and takes its name from the abbey built in earlier times and known as Abatemarco, from the name of an abbot who probably lived there (ABA- Marcus). The castle is known as the Castle of San Michele for an olive wood statue of San Michele found in the church adjoining the Castle. 

The settlement was almost certainly a Norman conquest at the beginning of the year one thousand as evidenced by the type of building and the nearby aqueduct. The abbey was probably built by the Basilian monks inspired by the rules of St. Basil the Great during the Byzantine era. 

Il castello dell’Abatemarco si trova a picco sul fiume nel territorio di Santa Maria del Cedro e trae il suo nome dall’abbazia annessa costruita in epoca più remota e conosciuta come Abatemarco, dal nome di un abate che probabilmente vi risiedeva(Aba-Marcus). Il castello è noto come il Castello di San Michele  per una statua in legno d'ulivo di San Michele ritrovata nella chiesetta annessa al Castello.

L’insediamento fu quasi certamente una conquista normanna agli inizi dell’anno mille come testimoniano il tipo di costruzione e il vicino acquedotto. L’abbazia fu probabilmente edificata dai monaci basiliani ispirati alla regole di san Basilio Magno fondatore dell’ordine e giunti durante la dominazione bizantina.  

Subsequently, the abbey became a place of worship of Benedictine Monasticism and important point of contact with other abbeys. 

The ruins show that the structure of the castle consisted of a rectangular building with a cylindrical tower and a square tower. In the castle were unearthed perhaps the frescoes executed by monks who came from other monasteries; two of those paintings are now located in the town hall and one depicting Saint Sebastian the Martyr and the other a triptych of the Madonna and Child with a Bishop Saint and San Leonardo. 

In subsequent years, the feud dell'Abatemarco built around the castle came to include other buildings, including two towers and a prison, and was owned by great family of that times.

The church

Successivamente l’abbazia diventò luogo di culto del Monachesimo benedettino ed importante punto di contatto con altre abbazie.

Dalle rovine rimaste si desume che la struttura del castello si componeva di un edificio rettangolare con una torre cilindrica e un torrione quadrangolare. Nel castello sono stati rinvenuti degli affreschi forse eseguiti da monaci che giungevano da altri monasteri; due di tali affreschi sono oggi situati nella casa comunale e raffigurano uno San Sebastiano Martire e l'altro un trittico, la Madonna col Bambino tra un Santo Vescovo e San Leonardo. 

Negli anni successivi il feudo dell’Abatemarco costruito attorno al castello arrivò a comprendere anche altre costruzioni tra cui due torri e un carcere e fu proprietà delle famiglie grandi del tempo.
