Yule, the Winter Solstice

The December Solstice is on Dec 20, 21, 22 or 23. It is called the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and the Summer Solstice in the Southern.
In the Northern the Solstice also called Yule is the festival of light that celebrates the return of sun. Yule happens when the dark half of the year relinquish to the light half. It is a solstice night, the longest night of the year with a celebration of the sun rebirth. As a festival of the Sun, the most important part of any Yule celebration is light candles, bonfires, and more.
From this day until Misdummer, the sun grows ever stronger. Many ancient cultures, from the Nordic Vikings to the Celtic Druids, Romans and Egypthians ritualized  this sacred time to promote spiritual activity.
Yule celebration comes from the Celtic legend of the battle between the young Oak King and the Holly King. The Oak King,  God of waxing year, representing the light of the new year, tries each year to usurp the old Holly King, God of the waning year who is the symbol of darkness.

Romans celebrated the festival of Saturnalia, a holiday in honor of the agricultural god, Saturn that was celebrated with involved sacrifices, gift-giving, special privileges for slaves and a lot of feasting.
As Yule symbol, evergreen have always been brought indoors at Yuletide symbolize everlasting life. The rituals survives in the  traditional Christmas tree. Other traditions are: kissing under the mistletoe, bell ringing, spinning wheels and making Yule logs.

At Christmas Eve, the head of the family burned in the fireplace of the house a large log of wood. The Yule Log was originally an entire tree, that was carefully chosen and brought into the house with great ceremony. The largest end of the log would be placed into the fire hearth while the rest of the tree stuck out into the room! It was used to keep the fire in the twelve days until the Epiphany.  At the remains of the log were attributed  magical properties (it was believed that favor the crop, livestock, the fertility of women and animals and health and protect against lightning) and were often re-used the following year. The Yule log is considered one of the oldest Christmas traditions.
