Fêtes Galantes

Paul Verlaine
Claire de Lune - Fêtes Galantes
(1869)

Mardi Gras is coming and a precious book gives me the opportunity to show some delightful illustrations of italian masks!
About a year ago, I had the privilege to admire a beautiful painting in a private collection and I fell in love with it immediately!. It was one of the paintings of Antoine Calbet (1860 - 1944), a French author, famous for its female nudes and paintings of young ladies.
In seeking something about him, I discovered that Calbet painted many famous works including an edition of Fêtes Galantes, Romances sans paroles, La legende de Paul Verlaine, a symbolist and damned poet, recognized as the teacher of the young poets of his time.
I found the book on sale in a French antique book shop on line. It is an edition published on 1937 by Rombaldi editor illustrated with original compositions color by A. Calbet. It is wonderful book! I've enjoyed it very much!

Cantando in tono minore

In Fêtes Galantes, Verlaine offers costumed characters, with their monologues, unheeded, in a setting of dream and reality. Harlequin, Columbine, Pierrot, are inspired by the eighteenth-century French paintings, as Watteau, Fragonard and others.
Verlaine remember some aspects of the eighteenth-century life, through the color of the time and sunlight, filtered through memory and nostalgia; the tone oscillates between gaiety and melancholy.
"Clair de Lune" is a beautiful opening poem of Fêtes Galantes, full of references to the pantomime and Pierrot, connected in an allusive manner to moon, death and melancholy that hides behind the joy exhibited.

Clair de Lune
Your soul is a chosen landscape
Where charming masqueraders and bergamaskers go
Playing the lute and dancing and almost
Sad beneath their fanciful disguises.

All sing in a minor key
Of victorious love and the opportune life,
They do not seem to believe in their happiness
And their song mingles with the moonlight,

With the still moonlight, sad and beautiful,
That sets the birds dreaming in the trees
And the fountains sobbing in ecstasy,
The tall slender fountains among marble statues.

A Verlaine’s friend Claude Debussy, set to music a Suite bergamasque composed for piano solo in which the third and most famous movement is "Clair de lune" inspired by the poetry of Verlaine. The style of Debussy joins impressionism painting, impressionism music, in contact with the symbolist poetry. He was the most representative of the musical style that became known as "Impressionism in music" emerged in France in the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century.

A Venetian Masquerade

Pietro_Longhi, Il ridotto- link

Mysterious and intriguing the Carnival of Venice is one of the most beautiful in the world!
The first evidence of this Carnival dates back to a document of the Doge Vitale Falier in 1094, where he talks about public amusements and carnival in which the word is mentioned for the first time. The gradual development of this celebration has led over the centuries to a real production of masks techniques and costumes by the craftsmen  called "maschereri" a guild that since the time of the Doge Foscari, possessed a their statutes, dated back April 10, 1436.

By the passing of time masquerade became a fashion able to level all social divisions and authorize the public derision of authority and aristocracy.

Since the thirteenth century one of the most common disguises was the Bauta whose main characteristic was to hide the face. It was used both during the carnival and in everyday life.
The people who wore it became unrecognizable as the mask hiding his face and altered voice.
Initially, the mask was black then were created Baute with white gypsum. The Bauta was often worn with the traditional black hat called ‘tricorno’ and a 'tabarro’ a black coat originating from the tradition of the eighteenth-century used by aristocracy to hide their identities.

Another very common mask was the 'moretta' or 'servetta muta' (mute servant) so called because it is held to the face by a button inside the mouth that did not allow dialogue. It was a small black velvet mask worn with a hat with fine garments and glazes.

Other typical costumes of the times were Gnaga, a simple disguise used by men and women consists of a mask with the likeness of a cat (the people who wore it carried a basket on his arm that usually contained a kitten) and the Bernardone, a disguise used mostly by the common people a disguise used mostly by the common people that consists as a sick woman forced to walk with  crutches.

Finally, the Medico della Peste (Plague Doctor), one of the most bizarre masks shaped as curved beak associated with the beak of a vulture. The mask impersonating the doctor who was going to visit the patients suffering from this disease. He wore goggles, gloves and a wand used to raised the garments of sick people. It was thought that this dress could guarantee protection from infection to the doctor. The origin seems to be from a French physician, Charles de Lorme, dating back to the sixteenth century.
