Elizabeth Jane Coatsworth (May 31, 1893 – August 31, 1986) was an American writer of fiction and poetry for children and adults. She won the 1931 Newbery Medal from the American Library Association award recognizing The Cat Who Went to Heaven as the previous year's "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children."

The story is set in ancient Japan, and is about a penniless artist and a cat that his housekeeper brings home. The storyline is supposedly based on an old Buddhist folk tale and this timeless fable has been a classic since its first publication in 1930

Nel 1931 ha vinto la Newbery Medal conferita dal premio American Library Association con "Il gatto che è andato in cielo" riconosciuto come il contributo migliore alla letteratura americana per i bambini.

La storia è ambientata nel Giappone antico, e racconta di un artista squattrinato e di un gatto portato a casa dalla sua governante. La trama è presumibilmente basata su un antico racconto popolare buddista.
