A journey to Scotland (2)

Drumlaring castle

Drumlaring Castle
From Culzean Castle to Drumlaring Castle (about 53 km)

After our visit to the  beautiful Culzean Castle our journey continued to the another wonderful castle: Drumlaring, situated on the Queensberry Estate in Dumfriesshire, Dumfries and Galloway. As written on the castel web site, 'a visit to Drumlanrig Castle immerse yourself in over 600 years of The Douglas Family’s history!’

The 'Pink Palace' of Drumlanrig was constructed between 1679 and 1689 from distinctive pink sandstone. It  is an example of late 17th century Renaissance architecture. The first Duke of Queensberry, William Douglas, had built the castle  on the site of an ancient Douglas stronghold overlooking Nith Valley. The castle has 120 rooms, 17 turrets and 4 towers!

Drumlaring Castle
The castle story began in the 14th Century when William, the son of James, 2nd Earl of Drumlanrig (who died at Otterburn in 1388) became the 1st Laird of Drumlanrig.
Over the decades the Douglas family stayed close to the monarchy, even if the relationship did have its difficult times and James Douglas was one of the Lords responsible for driving Mary Queen of Scots out of the country in 1567. Yet Mary’s son, James Vl and l, chose to visit Drumlanrig in 1617 and the royal bond continued to strengthen. William, 3rd Earl of Queensberry, was very loyal to Charles II and was made 1st Duke of Queensberry in 1684. (I took this information from the castel web site).

Drumlaring Castle

The castle is home to part of the Buccleuch art collection created by the Dukes of Buccleuch and Queensberry over the centuries which includes Rembrandt’s An Old Woman Reading, Leonardo da Vinci's Madonna of the Yarnwinder (which was stolen in 2003 and returned in 2007 after being found in Glasgow), and many other paintings, tapestries, furniture, silver carvings and precious objects d’art.

Today the castle owner is the current Duke of Buccleuch, Richard Scott, the 10th Duke (the largest private landowner in the United Kingdom and chairman of the Buccleuch Group). The family owns prestigious homes in the UK still lived in by the family and are also open to the public.
Sir Walter Scott, was directly descended of the Lords of Buccleuch. His family history, fancifully interpreted, is the main subject of much of The Lay of the Last Minstrel.
