On a rocky cliff near Maybole (Southwestern Scotland) stands the Culzean Castle,  one of the most visited castles in Scotland, the residence of the Marquis of Aisla, Count of Cassillis head of the Kennedy clan now owned by the National Trust for Scotland.

Su di un dirupo roccioso nella Scozia Sud occidentale nei dintorni di Maybole si staglia il maschio del XVI secolo del castello Culzean. E’ uno dei più visitati castelli scozzesi, residenza del marchese di Aisla, conte di Cassillis capo del clan dei Kennedy ora di proprietà del National Trust for Scotland.

The present building dates from the period between 1777 and 1792. It was constructed by the architect Robert Adam on the foundations of an existing tower built in the XV - XVI century named House of Cove or Coif Castle. Adam converted an old fortified towercastle for David Kennedy, the 10th Earl of Cassillis, creating at Culzean probably the finest Georgian castle in Scotland.

L’attuale costruzione risale al periodo tra il 1777 e il 1792 ad opera dall'architetto Robert Adam sulle fondamenta di uno preesistente attestato nel XV – XVI secolo come House of Cove o Coif Castle, un edificio che comprendeva la costruzione di una torre. Adam convertì la torre creando l'attuale castello definito un capolavoro dello stile georgiano.

Culzean castle

During the seventeenth century were built the gardens and the castle began to be known as Cullean Castle (then changed to Culzean Castle in the next century).

In 1969, the Culzean Country Park surrounding the castle became the first public park in Scottish rural area.

Nel corso del XVII secolo furono realizzati i giardini e all’epoca il castello iniziò ad essere conosciuto come Cullean Castle (forma poi mutata in Culzean Castle nel secolo successivo). Nel 1969 il Culzean Country Park che circonda il castello divenne il primo parco pubblico scozzese in zona rurale.

Among the wonders of this castle are the oval staircase considered one of the masterpieces of architect Robert Adam adorned with Ionic and Corinthian columns, the sitting room overlooking the cliff 46 meters above the Firth of Clyde (a deep inlet located on the west coast of Scotland), Fountain Court, the walled garden and the greenhouse for screws in Victorian style.

Tra le meraviglie di questo castello troviamo scala ovale considerata uno dei capolavori dell'architetto Robert Adam abbellita da colonne ioniche e corinzie, il salone che affaccia sul dirupo di 46 m sopra il Firth of Clyde (una profonda insenatura situata nella costa occidentale della Scozia), il Fountain Court, il giardino murato e la serra per viti in stile vittoriano.

At the top floor there is the apartment dedicates to Eisenhower, because it was donated in 1945 by the Scots to General Eisenhower as a gratitude  for the help received by the Americans during the Second World War.

All'ultimo piano dell'edificio si trova l'appartamento di Eisenhower, chiamato così in quanto nel 1945 fu donato dagli scozzesi al generale Eisenhower come ringraziamento per l'aiuto ricevuto dagli statunitensi nel corso della seconda guerra mondiale.

According to legend, the castle was inhabited by at least seven ghosts, including a piper and a waitress. It is said that in 1976 two tourists visiting the castle they saw a particular form misty in the Oval Office. It seems that this was not the only case and that the ghost is attributed to one of the Kennedy clan owners of the castle. 

Secondo la leggenda, il castello sarebbe abitato da almeno sette fantasmi, tra cui quello di un pifferario e quello di una cameriera. Si racconta che nel 1976 due turisti in visita al castello videro una particolare forma nebbiosa nella Sala ovale. Pare che questo non sia stato l’unico caso e che il fantasma sia attribuito ad uno del clan dei Kennedy proprietari del castello.

Since 1987 the castle is depicted on the reverse of the banknote five pound issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Dal 1987 il castello è raffigurato sul retro della banconota da cinque pound emessa dalla Royal Bank of Scotland.
