8 March

"There must be more equality established in society, or morality will never gain ground, and this virtuous equality will not rest firmly even when founded on a rock, if one half of mankind are chained to its bottom by fate, for they will be continually undermining it through ignorance or pride".
Mary Wollstonecraft, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, Chapter 9.

Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (London, April 27, 1759 - London, 10 September 1797) was a British philosopher and writer, considered the founder of liberal feminism.
A Vindication of the Rights of Woman: with Strictures on Political and Moral Subjects is one of the earliest works of feminist philosophy and is considered a milestone in the history of feminism.
Written in 1792 the text is a response to those intellectuals, political theorists and educators of the time that denied women education. She argues that women are not naturally inferior to men, but appear to be only because they lack education. Instead of viewing women as ornaments to society or property to be traded in marriage, Wollstonecraft maintains that they are human beings deserving of the same fundamental rights as men.
She argues that women ought to have an education commensurate with their position in society, claiming that women are essential to the nation because they educate its children and because they could be "companions" to their husbands, rather than mere wives.
She married the philosopher William Godwin, a precursor of anarchism, with whom she had daughter Mary, known writer and wife of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.
