Christmas at the castle

In the medieval town of Limatola near Benevento, you can partecipate at "Cadeaux al castello," a delightful Christmas market just inside the fortified walls.

The first castel documents dates back to the XII century, but its origins are probably previous. The castle we can admire today, is the result of many work over the centuries.

Each year the event "Cadeaux al Castello" attracts hundreds of tourists. Scents, flavors, colors blend in medieval Christmas atmosphere. The market with many artisans stand are inside and outside the castle.  My blog tour stats from ...

Winter Windows

“She opened her curtains, and looked out towards the bit of road that lay in view, with fields beyond outside the entrance-gates. On the road there was a man with a bundle on his back and a woman carrying her baby; in the field she could see figures moving - perhaps the shepherd with his dog. Far off in the bending sky was the pearly light; and she felt the largeness of the world and the manifold wakings of men to labor and endurance. She was a part of that involuntary, palpitating life, and could neither look out on it from her luxurious shelter as a mere spectator, nor hide her eyes in selfish complaining.”
Middlemarch, George Eliot, 1874

Homeward bound by James Edwin Meadows
Middlemarch, George Eliot, 1874

Essex Landscape by James Edwin Meadows

Windows open on a landscapes are a great attraction for me. They let me imagine of unknown lands where nature is the 'Queen'. Then, from a beautiful description of an 'open window' by George Eliot in her masterpiece Middlemarch, I open 'my blog windows' on the magical season of winter imagining to enjoy these views in front of a fireplace, with a steaming cup of tea and a wonderful book in my hands.

Giacomo Leopardi by Liebig

"Raggio divino al mio pensiero apparve,
Donna, la tua beltà. Simile effetto
Fan la bellezza e i musicali accordi,
Ch'alto mistero d'ignorati Elisi
Paion sovente rivelar".
Aspasia, Giacomo Leopardi, 1834

In nineteenth century many companies gave beautiful cards as advertisment. These cards often rapresented lovely scenes in black and white or color scenes with the advertisements of the brand on them.
In Italy the most famous figurines were made by Baron Justus von Liebig to advertise Liebig meat extracts.
Over the years cards have become small masterpieces of the chromolithographic art. They were made with big attention to detail, drawings and descriptions.

The serie that I show below  is "The Canti of Leopardi" published on the 1966.

N.1 - All'Italia
(1818)

N. 2 - L'infinito
(1819)

The cards were published by Liebig from 1872 to 1974. They were published 1871 series each containing from 6 to 12 figurines in size 7 x 11. The drawings of each series concerned different topics: nature, history, art, science, literature, theater etc.
The series issued after the First World War have quotations quite accessible. Those published before, are considered rarities and they have considerable value.
Today these figurines attract collectors from around the world and some of them are rarities such as the first series printed in France.

N. 3 - Le Ricordanze
(1829)

(1829-1830)

N. 5 - Il sabato del villaggio
(1829)

I love them! Take a look at the color and the details! The series ends with "La Ginestra," one of the last poems written at 'Villa Ferrigni' in Torre del Greco, my hometown!:)

N. 6 - La Ginestra
(1836)

"A ray divine, O lady! to my thought
Thy beauty seemed. A like effect is oft
By beauty caused, and harmony, that seem
The mystery of Elysium to reveal"
(from "The Poems Of Giacomo Leopardi" Translated by Frederick Townsenda, 1887)
