"O Captain! My Captain!"

Walt Whitman
31 maggio 1819 – 26 marzo 1892

“This is what you shall do; Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body.”
Preface to Leaves of Grass, Walt Whitman, (1855)

Prefazione a "Foglie d'erba', Walt Whitman  (1885)

Walt Whitman has been claimed as America's first "poet of democracy". He was born on May 31, 1819 in West Hills, New York, into a Quaker family. He worked as a journalist, a teacher, a government clerk, and was a volunteer nurse during the American Civil War. In 1855 he self-published the collection "Leaves of Grass"; the book is now a landmark in American literature. Leaves of Grass, was the "most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom to come from an American pen"(R.W. Emerson). During his lifetime had gone through many editions and expanded to some 300 poems. In 1865 he wrote "O Captain! My Captain!" a metaphor about the death of American president Abraham Lincoln. The poem was written after the assassination of Lincoln and has metaphorical references to this theme. The ship is the United States of America, while the fearful trip recalls the difficulties of the American Civil War. The captain of the title is Lincoln.
