Lughnasadh - August 1

Lughnasadh is a traditional Gaelic holiday celebrated on 1 August. In this day of the year, the ancient Celtic tribes celebrated the god Lugh, Irish deity represented in mythological texts as a hero and High King of the distant past. He is known as Lámhfhada (meaning "long arm" or "long hand"), for his skill with a spear or sling.
In neo-paganism and paganism Lughnasadh (or Lughnasa or Lunasa) is one of eight Sabbath (the first of three that celebrate the harvest season, the others are Mabon and Samhain.) The feast commemorates the sacrifice of God (in the form of wheat) in its cycle of death (to give nourishment to the population) and rebirth, the grain was identified as one of the aspects of the sun god, who was called Lúg'.

(cfr Wikipedia.it)

Lúg by Jim Fitzpatrick *
Lughnasadh was therefore an agrarian feast, at the end of the period of harvest of hay, were preparing to harvest wheat and barley arrived, thanks to the warmth of the sun, at the peak of their ripeness. We are therefore at the end of the summer, ideal time for the main crop. It was an opportunity to gather for games and banquets (even today in some regions the traditional festivals are held). The celebration of Lughnasadh were commonly held on hilltops where people clambering to drive for the collection of blueberries. Another custom was the visit to the holy wells (as a wish for good health) and the bonfires whose ashes were used to bless the fields and livestock.
In Gaelic Ireland, Lughnasadh was also a favored time for handfastings—trial marriages that would generally last a year and a day, with the option of ending the contract before the new year, or formalizing it as a lasting marriage (en.wikipedia.org)

Lùg by Roger Garland **

The sacred plant for this celebration is the ear of wheat or barley: the ancients believed that a sacred force is embodied in the last sheaf reaped from which they must extract the future harvest of beans and scatter the ashes to fertilize the land of the ears .

source: Bank Of England

Sense and Sensibility Locations (2008 TV miniseries)

I just finished watching the BBC version of Sense and Sensibility (2008). The story, the characters, the actors, and the places are, in my opinion, absolutely fantastic!. How beautiful houses, silent witnesses of stories. I love imagine their owners. I tried to know something more about the film locations ...  maybe ...one day I could go...:)

Blackpool Mill, the home of the Dashwood girls, is a fifteenth-century cottage in north Devon (turned into Barton Cottage). Hartland village is only 2 miles. On its web site I've found this description: "At night the only lights to be seen are the lighthouses on the island, at Hartland Point and further down into Cornwall.

Clovelly Pier
Devon

Clovelly is a small village in the Torridge district of Devon, England. It is a major tourist attraction, exceptional in its history and beauty, its extremely steep car-free cobbled main street, donkeys and its location looking out over the Bristol Channel. Thick woods shelter it and render the climate so mild that even tender plants flourish. As of the 2011 Census the civil parish itself that includes the Isle of Lundy had a population of just 443 people, 50 fewer than ten years previously (from en.wikipedia.org)

A journey into the past

I love places where there are historical reconstructions. Walking through the streets it seems that we take a leap into the past...as if we were in those days ..
Traveling in northern Europe, I have visited different places, all very interesting ...
Here I write about a place in Denmark, at Aarhus, where it has been reconstructed a village of the 1800s and 1900s ...

Den Gamle By - "The Old Town" - was founded in 1909 as the world's first open-air museum of urban history and culture.
75 historical houses from all over Denmark shape the contours of a Danish town as it might have looked in Hans Christian Andersen's days, with streets, shops, yards, homes and workshops.

Many  guides are dressed with historical costumes...These two grannies seem to come from a book by Jane Austen ...:) Gorgeous...!!:)

At the moment two new neighbourhoods are being built - from the 1920s and 1970s. Furthermore Den Gamle By consists of several museums and exhibitions.
You can visit living rooms, chambers, kitchens, workshops and museums all year round, and you can meet the people and characters of yesteryear throughout the museum from Easter to 30th December.
Den Gamle By is under the patronage of the Danish Queen and it is one of Denmark’s few 3 star attractions in Guide Michelin and the only one outside the capital area.

The oldest section of Den Gamle By contains buildings dating from 1550 to 1900. These historical houses recreate a Danish town as it looked in Hans Christian Andersen’s day, complete with streets, alleys, yards, gardens, home and workshop interiors, and shops.

Images from my city harbour

Yesterday walking on the harbor I met this 'little friend'. How nice it was, walked proud and undisturbed, free to go without having to return ...
I took pictures with my mobile (I know that they are not clean!) and I ran to home and read a few steps of the legendary book "The Seagull". It's book full of poetry, full of phrases that make you think ...then..I write this post:)

“Don’t believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation.
Look with your understanding. Find out what you already know and you will see the way to fly.”
Jonathan Livingston, Richard Bach

The book

The story
Jonathan Livingston is a seagull that abandons the mass of common gulls, for whom flying is not that a simple and clumsy way to get food, and learn to make the flight as an act of skill and intelligence, the source of perfection and joy. It becomes a symbol, the ideal guide for those who have the power to obey its own internal law, of those who try a particular pleasure in doing things well, which are grown. And Jonathan the reader is drawn into an exciting adventure of flying, pure air and freedom.
